Reincarnation
…I just can’t look away!
A couple of weeks ago I posted the teaser to this short on the Home James Facebook wall and almost couldn’t wait for the full length video! It launched a week ago, and I’ve watched it several times. Reincarnation is the story behind Coco Chanel’s inspiration for the iconic jacket that made her famous. Starring the likes of Pharrell Williams, Cara Delevingne and Géraldine Chaplin (daughter of Charlie) as Coco it’s an eclectic cast of Karl Lagerfeld’s admirers.
Elle has some fun facts on the production:
The film is based in reality. It details the birth of the iconic Chanel jacket, to be specific. Coco Chanel was apparently on holiday in Austria when she was inspired by the uniform of a hotel elevator operator—played here by Pharrell.
The cast is quite large (and legendary). Expect to see notable Chanel muses ranging from Geraldine Chaplin (daughter of Charlie) and Lady Amanda Harlech to 6-year-old Lagerfeld favorite Hudson Kroenig, who dances and sings as a miniature bellboy.
“CC” isn’t just a reference to the Chanel logo. It’s also a historical nod to Austrian Empress Elisabeth, who went by “Sisi.”
The film started with Pharrell. Lagerfeld says that after Pharrell approached him with an interest to collaborate with Cara D, the concept and plot sprung to life.
This is Cara’s first singing performance. Cara says she “screamed down the phone” at Williams when he told her about the song he wrote for them. Even the Kaiser himself couldn’t help but blithely remark on his own role in Delevingne’s blossoming singing career: “For her to start singing with Pharrell is not that bad, no?”
