Coming Soon…
Art History on the Silver Screen…
We’re back to some regularly scheduled programming after a few weeks of Hallowe’en themed posts. I look forward to Christmas for a few reasons [Santa!], but one of the best might be the new releases at the cinema. There are quite a few interesting pictures coming out soon, and some based on art history heroes! Here are some trailers to whet your palette:
Big Eyes
This is the newest Tim Burton offering based on the true story of Walter and Margaret Keane. Famed for his portraits of children with large eyes, Walter was not shy when it came to taking credit for the sad depictions. Little did his dealers or audience know that the works were really produced by his wife Margaret who was kept as basically an art making slave. The real Margaret Keane makes a brief cameo in the film and you can read more on her story in the Guardian here. Set to open Christmas Day
Mr Turner
I’ve been anticipating the release of this bio-pic for a while now. Starring Timothy Spall as JMW Turner, Mr Turner follows the life of the fame British painter as he reaches the heights of success. Bendor over at Art History News has posted an exclusive clip, check it out here. Open in some cinemas now.
A Little Chaos
So, this is based on history — but the main character, a female landscape architect called Sabine De Barra, is a work of fiction. Directed by Alan Rickman, this story documents the construction of the grand gardens of Versailles. Elements of reality exist, such as the inclusion of real landscape architect André Le Nôtre. This premiered at TIFF in September, and I’ve yet to find a wide release date…fingers crossed it’ll be coming soon!
