How To: Fake Bruises!

I am a self-taught horror make-up enthusiast! My background is in fine arts and theatre and so it wasn’t a stretch for me to become enthralled with the world of fake blood and liquid latex! Every year around Halloween I get lots of questions about my various make-up techniques and so, thanks to the lovely Amy here at Home James, I am sharing them through this blog. Over the next few weeks I’ll show you some of the stuff involved in creating the perfect gory look for your next Halloween party!
Bruises!
Bruises are the foundation to good zombie or dead-something-or-other make-up and the best part is they are pretty easy!
What You Need:
Cream Make-up: (The make-up pictured is the Ben-Nye master bruise wheel)
Red
Dark Red
Dark Blue
Yellow
Green
Sponges
Brushes
Setting Powder (not pictured)
Step One
Using a brush, sponge or your finger begin to dab some of the brighter red in the shape of the bruise you want to create. Blend outwards from the centre of the bruise. Don’t use too much too fast, it’s always better to start small and build up.
Step Two
Using a brush or sponge make some small splotches with the dark red. Blend into the skin using your finger or a sponge. Again, build up as necessary.
Step Three
Using the a brush or sponge dab the dark blue around the centre of your bruise. Blend with a sponge or your finger and build up as dark as you’d like.
Step Four
Add a touch of yellow around the edges, as bruises get older they tend to turn yellow so the amount is completely up to you.
Step Five (Optional)
Sometimes when you bruise you get little tiny pools of blood under the skin called petechiae. You can add these in with very light dabs of the bright red using your finger, or ideally with a stippling sponge.
Step Six (Optional)
Older bruises as I mentioned before tend to turn yellow and the blues tend to go more brown or green. To make a bruise look older mix your yellow and dark red together to make brown and add a few dabs of green.
Step Seven
Once you are happy with your bruise brush a little neutral setting powder over your make-up so it will last the night!
Bruises come in all shapes, sizes, colours and tones so play around, you pretty much can’t go wrong! Have fun!
