1. Model’s Perspective of Behind the Scenes
Louise Parker has walked the runway for Yves St Laurent, Chanel, and Dior but she’s definitely more than just a pretty face. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in photography from Bard in 2012 and has been documenting life backstage. Her shots offer an interesting perspective; they aren’t journalistic like most shots. They are more personal, it’s apparent that she has an intimate knowledge of the settings and her colleagues. Click here to see more of her work.
2. DIY Elderflower Champagne
Now, I know that Home James has more of an arts and culture vibe but I couldn’t resist sharing Peony Lim’s recipe for Elderflower Champagne. A staple of British summertime, Elderflower will always remind me of hot days in London. Head over to Peony’s blog to get all the details on how to make your own delicious concoction.
3. Gregg Segal Shoots People in Garbage
Californian photographer Gregg Segal is trying to raise awareness about the amount of refuse we produce. His new series features people laying in a week’s worth of their discarded packaging and household waste. Entitled 7 Days of Garbage, he is trying to portray people from different social backgrounds to reach the largest audience possible:
Obviously, the series is guiding people toward a confrontation with the excess that’s part of their lives. I’m hoping they recognize a lot of the garbage they produce is unnecessary.
The results of the project are hauntingly beautiful, and their shock value alone is portraying an important message. His sitters are relatable, and so is much of the trash that’s featured (especially for North American readers). See more of the photographs here.
4. Iconic Contact Sheets
This is a photo heavy follow up this week. We’ve missed the exhibition at Milk Gallery (it closed last weekend) but fortunately there is a slideshow available On The Cut. A photographers contact sheets give away their secrets: cropping, orientation and repetition. See the originals of many iconic photographs. Some are so well manipulated that they are almost unrecognizable. The slideshow is available here.
5. Flea Market Finds for Under $15
Emily over at Cupcakes & Cashmere has made a round up of her favourite flea market bargains. Her list gives advice on how to furnish your home on a budget, including design elements such as knobs (for revamping second hand furniture) and textiles (perfect for decorating an outdoor space).
