Happy Birthday Tim Hortons!
A Canadian Institution is celebrating a milestone…
So, I know that celebrating the birthday of a coffee shop might be a little atypical for Home James, but as a Canadian I feel like I need to recognise this milestone — they’ve just turned 50! To celebrate Tim Hortons gave out free coffee and donuts in Dundas Square this morning – a treat for the morning commute!
There was a pop up museum on site featuring packaging since the beginning. Some of it even depicted the man himself, Tim Horton!
One of the highlights of the museum was meeting Florence and Faye. These lovely ladies were two of the original Tim Hortons employees! They’ve seen it grow from one shop into an empire.
Dundas Square was decked out as if it were 1964. The Tim Horton’s counter featured treats that aren’t available anymore (including the perennial favourite eclairs) and there were a full cast of characters wandering about, including a police officer keeping the queue in order.
The Stanley Cup and a few vintage cars made an appearance. The queue to get your photograph taken with the famous trophy was longer than the one to get free coffee and donuts!
It’s often forgotten that the store is named after a Canadian Hockey great who died tragically in a car accident. In the minds of most Canadians, I think that this is the coffee of hockey. I remember early Saturday mornings as a kid at arctic chilled rinks watching my brother play and the only consolation prize for sitting in an unheated arena was a hot drink. As a company, they’re committed to sport, providing free skates & swims and supporting local junior teams all over Canada.
