How To: Fake Burns!

I am a self-taught horror make-up enthusiast! My background is in fine arts and theatre and so it wasn’t a stretch for me to become enthralled with the world of fake blood and liquid latex! Every year around Halloween I get lots of questions about my various make-up techniques and so, thanks to the lovely Amy here at Home James, I am sharing them through this blog. Over the next few weeks I’ll show you some of the stuff involved in creating the perfect gory look for your next Halloween party!
Burns!
Burns are a great way to cover a large area in a fairly short amount of time and look particularly gory!
What You Need:
Cream Make-up: (The make-up pictured is the Ben-Nye master bruise wheel)
Red
Dark Red
Dark Blue or Black
Yellow
A pale skin tone foundation
Liquid Latex
Blood (The make-up pictured is Fresh Scab by Ben Nye)
Sponges
Brushes
Setting Powder
Step One
Start spreading a layer of liquid latex over the area you’d like to have your burn. Try to keep the edges smooth but the middle second can be uneven. You can even use your finger or a stippling sponge to disturb the latex as it’s drying.
You’ll need about 4-6 layers. Let each one dry in between, you can use a hairdryer to speed things along.
Step Two
This is the fun part (unless you placed your wax over an area with any hair). Start peeling up section of your wax to create a bubbling, scarred look. You can even cut open a few areas with a small pair of scissors.
Step Three
Time to paint! Start my sponging a layer of bright red over the entire area. You can be pretty liberal, new burns are often very red.
Next, take a brush and your dark red and begin to fill in some of the open area in the latex, getting the brush right under the latex. Also colour any latex edges and rough spots with some dark red.
Add a little dark blue or black to the edges of the peeled latex. Do this sparingly as black can easily take over and spread everywhere.
If you find your reds are taking over a bit, or are too bright you can mix a little yellow and a pale skin tone together and sponge that around the edges and a few spots in the centre.
Step Four
Finally, dab just a little bit of blood or fresh scab into the open part of the latex.
And that’s it! Enjoy your gory burn!
