Let’s Talk About Cake
…there’s nothing better than funfetti!
I read a lot of blogs, dedicated to a wide variety of subjects such as fashion, art and food. One of my favourite things to oogle is cake pictures. If I am honest, I don’t really like eating cake all that much. With more of a salty tooth, my preference is to admire them as edible works of art. This post is an ode to my friend Victoria, my cake-eating partner in crime that is about to embark on her next great adventure.
Without delay, here’s a roundup of some of the prettiest cakes I’ve seen on the internet, chosen not just for aesthetic but edibility (no fondant here). In the words of Kate Spade: Eat Cake for Breakfast!
My Name is Yeh – the Queen of Funfetti
Molly Yeh’s site, My Name is Yeh is littered with cake recipes. She imagines up some stunning designs and flavour combinations which have almost convinced me I could replicate her success. Her post on funfetti cake is probably one of my favourites: she made the sprinkles! Not only did she make all the little jimmys herself, she experimented to get the best results in the areas of colour saturation, cake suspension and taste and graciously shares the results with her readers.
A Cup of Jo’s Olive Oil Cake
Former Glamour columnist Joanna Goddard keeps me coming back for more with a plethora of weekly series (right now she shares a vegetarian recipe every Monday). She now has an extensive archive on her site containing featuring topics such as parenting advice, love + sex (her former specialty) and food. This olive oil cake caught my attention. She usually advertises recipes with the phrase: The Best … You’ll Ever Eat! I’m not really an icing fan, my sister stole that gene – so this simple olive oil cake really appeals to me. Don’t worry, your sweet tooth will still be satisfied with a rum glaze!
Pavlova with Rosewater Whipped Cream on A Beautiful Mess
Emma Chapman, one half of the sister-duo behind A Beautiful Mess, is a genius in the kitchen. She’s always experimenting with unusual flavours, and documenting the process with the really stunning food photography. This recipe for pavlova featuring rosewater whipped cream would be the perfect light finish to a heavy winter meal – Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.
Wit + Delight’s Summery Shortcakes
Roasted stone fruits with rosemary, vanilla and olive oil are the base for this summer recipe and I couldn’t resist including it. Desserts like this are so British to me, and Wit + Delight knows how to do them right. The post’s introduction contains some romantic quotes to get you in the spirit:
“Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.”
-T.S. Eliot, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”
Lets all close our eyes and remember that cherry season is just around the corner!
