Not Just Ladies Who Lunch: Annie France Noël
Getting to know some fabulous ladies who work in the arts!
Welcome to the Monday series Not Just Ladies Who Lunch. This will be an ongoing addition to the blog, meant to introduce you to some arts professionals. Their jobs will vary from freelance graphic designers to music composers, auction house specialists to cake decorators. Be sure to check back every Monday for a new profile. Meet Annie France!
Annie France Noël hails from Caraquet, a small Acadian town situated north-east of the province, and now calls Moncton (New-Brunswick, Canada) home. This is where she attended all of the photography classes available at Université de Moncton. A professional artist, freelance photographer and director of photography and camerawoman for Atlas Films, she’s also a dedicated arts and culture community member and a volunteer for diverse organizations including the board of directors of the Galerie Sans Nom.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to become a stage actress, but soon realized I was better at conveying emotions via photography. I’ve now been enthralled in all its forms for over ten years now.
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given?
Always be looking.
Can you name your biggest success and/or failure in your career so far?
My biggest success in my young career was curating a photography exhibit in the Spring of 2013 as it gave me a platform to discuss the amplitude and complexities of the medium. It also allowed me grow tremendously as both an artist and a professional.
Name a tool you can’t live without.
Film. It’s just a beautiful, sensual, tangible yet ethereal artifact.
Do you have a mentor/Who would your dream mentor be?
My photography teacher, Julie Forgues, has been a great inspiration to me and I’m lucky to consider her a friend and a mentor. I’d love to pick the brains of Annie Leibovitz and Jamie Beck if I had the chance.
Tell us about your favourite picture/photograph/sculpture/etc.
It is difficult to pick one, it depends on my state of being. All work by Francesca Woodman move me beyond words. One of my favourite is “Then at one point I did not need to translate the notes; they went directly to my hands”
