Painter’s Playlist
…the sounds of the studio
The month of back to school has successfully passed, unless you’re British – then you’re in the throws of it. Here’s an ode to all of you that are still fresh faced and bushy tailed.
Now, I don’t make any claims to being a painter after having the will to paint beat out of me in art school — but I still feel a certain nostalgia for certain songs and artists. After graduating with a BFA in 2009, I still have my go tos for the studio which have now unfortunately been downgraded to tasks such as cleaning the bathroom and doing paperwork. Things I could [attempt] to sing or hum along to while mindlessly completing very labourious work. I will always love this playlist.
Norah Jones – Sunrise
Almost any Norah Jones album fits the bill, but this one is particularly good. Painter Song is another studio standard.
The Shins – New Slang
This is a throw back to the days when we were all in love with Garden State.
Coldplay – Fix You
The first few lines are a bit of an anthem for how every art student feels at points. Mentions of failure and exhaustion. It’s a good one.
Stars – Your Ex-Lover is Dead
This is an emotional little diddy. It’s almost ten years old. Holy cow!
Julie Doiron – Consolation Prize
A Sackville staple. You could listen to Julie in the studio, then head down to Ducky’s and play fussball with her.
Wintersleep – Weighty Ghost
Hailing from Halifax, this song has maritimes written all over it.
Feist – Mushaboom
I remember being all over this song in 2006. Another maritimer, her father Harold Feist was a Canadian Ab-Ex painter that taught at Mount Allison briefly.
