Reasons to Love Washi Tape
…who knew tape could be so fun!
Washi tape is something I have only recently started getting into. I am amazed at all the fun colours, patterns and sizes you can find in your local craft store or dollar store. Cute, simple and affordable, what more could you ask for in a crafting item!
I could spend hours tell you all of the fun, creative ways people use washi tape, but I wouldn’t want to bore you. So i’ve narrowed down my massive list to 10 simple, fun and unique ways to use the tape.
-
Shelf decoration. This is perfect for someone who rents a space and doesn’t want to permenantly alter kitchen cabinets or bookcases. Line a strip of washi tape along the edge of the cupboard shelf or bookcase edge. Voila, instant transformation. (see image above)
-
Cake decorations. You could pay lots of money for cute cake toppers, or you could make your own. I always opt to make my own. And when they are this easy, how could you not! For the banner, simply fold a piece of tape around a string of yarn or twine, and cut the ends into points. Continue along the twine until you’ve researched your desired length. Cut the points smaller or larger depending on your cake size. The flags are a similar process, wrap a piece of tape around a tooth pick and cut into a point.
-
Light switch cover. This is my personal favourite. What a simple way to jazz up an otherwise blah item on the wall. And there is so much room for variety – place tape on angles, or straight up and down. Use one colour or a variety. The best part, you can easily peel it off when you don’t want it anymore without damaging the cover.
-
Jazz up a tin or jar. What a great way to repurpose a simple tin or jar into a cute, functional household item. Wrap the tape around the jar or tin. Leave space between rows, or don’t. Mix & match patterns and colours, or stick with one.
-
Leftovers Labels. I use washi tape all the time to label any food leftovers we have. I mark the containers with the item and date so that I know if it will expire. The nice thing about washi tape is that it peels off easily, so you don’t ruin your dishes.
-
Calendar marker. How cute is this! I love organization, and I carry my agenda with me everywhere I go. This is a great way to add some colour to a planner. I love the idea of using a long strip to cover multiple days (like a vacation!). You could colour code things too – for example, pink for when bills are due, green to mark payday, or blue to mark fun activities with friends. Or, if you are in planning mode, use the tape to temporary stick items/tasks on each square and adjust as needed. Instant organization that looks cute.
-
Add some colour to blinds. Lets face it, blinds are usually quite ugly. Especially metal ones. So why give them a simple makeover and add a few pops of colour to any room.
-
Laptop makeover. This is one project that I found that I’m really interested in. What a fun way to add character and make your laptop unique. Try covering the keys with pieces of tape, or using large strips to cover the exterior. The best part, when you don’t like it anymore you just peel it off with no damage to the device!
-
Stationery makeover. Washi tape on stationary items like pencils, pens, binder clips and notebooks is a great way to personalize some otherwise boring items. And it offers a lot of flexibility: cover the entire notebook or just the spine, the whole length of the pencil or make rings.
-
Kids car track. It’s like the old car mats of the 80s, but easier! Map out buildings, roads, and parking spots on the floor using the tape, and you instantly get a fun toy car play area for your kids. And because the tape peels off so easily, you won’t damage your floors. You can peel the tape whenever you want to adjust or expand the track as often as you want.
Any other ideas to add? Let me know in the comments!
