American photographer Levi Bettweiser has undertaken a huge project: processing found undeveloped rolls of film. Rescued Film Project, is his effort to find and rescue old and undeveloped rolls of film from the far corners of the world. Recently he came across one of his biggest finds so far – 31 rolls of film shot by a single soldier during World War II. The images he discovered are amazing!
Bettweiser’s site has an archive that is categorized by subject: Rescued People, Rescued Places and Rescued Things. The latest undertaking, processing negatives that were exposed decades ago, is a delicate affair. Using rudimentary equipment in his home, the film is treated with utmost care and documented every step of the way.
This video on vimeo shows his process. His goal is to reconnect the rolls of film with their owners, or if that’s not possible – to find an avenue to showcase them that best fits the subject matter.
